The Tax Formula – How It is Determined
The Assessor is required by State of Illinois statute to assess your property at one-third of its fair market value. The assessed amount is then used to determine the total property tax for a property.
Your tax rate is determined by the local taxing bodies in your area. These include your school district, park district, township, township roads and bridges and others (see the list below). These taxing bodies use property tax revenues to pay for the services they provide to the residents in their district.
Make your feelings known regarding your thoughts on tax rates and how your tax dollars are being spent. Attend meetings held by the local taxing districts and let local officials know how you feel.
